The passenger compartment of the Touareg remained stable in the front offset test. Dummy readings showed good protection of the
knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. VW showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of
different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. Protection of the chest of the driver dummy was rated as marginal, based on
dummy readings of compression during the test. Chest compression of both the driver and passenger dummy also led to a marginal rating
for protection of this body area in the full-width rigid barrier test, all other areas being well or adequately protected. In the side barrier test,
the Touareg scored maximum points with good protection of all body areas. In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was
rated as marginal, based on dummy readings of rib deflection. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection
of the neck against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good
whiplash protection. The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds,
typical of city driving, at which many whiplash injuries are caused.
In the frontal offset test, all critical body areas were well or adequately protected. In the side barrier impact, all body areas were well
protected. The front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear
information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and the system was rewarded. All of the child restraints for which
the Touareg is designed could be properly installed and accommodated.
VULNERABLE ROAD USERS
The Touareg has a ‘pop-up’ bonnet for additional pedestrian protection. Sensors at the front of the car detect when a pedestrian has
been struck and actuators raise the bonnet to provide greater clearance ot the hard structures in the engine compartment. VW showed
that the system worked robustly for different pedestrian statures and over a range of speeds, so the car was tested with the bonnet in the
raised position. Protection of the head was almost entirely good or adequate. The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians’ legs
at all test sites, and maximum points were scored. However, protection of the pelvis area was poor at nearly all locations. The AEB system
can detect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. Tests of its this functionality demonstrated good or adequate

seats. The speed assistance system, which consists of speed-limit recognition and a driver-set limiter, was rated as adequate. The lane
support system helps to keep the driver from drifting out of lane but can also intervene in some emergency situations.
The new Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC: New entry-level model opens up the world of driving performance

It is based on the new Mercedes front-wheel drive platform and is powered by a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine with output of 225 kW (306 hp). Body shell, suspension, all-wheel drive, transmission, driving programs, fine tuning – every detail has been designed for maximum driving dynamics without compromising on everyday comfort. The performance at sports car level (acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds) and the specific design also strengthen the identity as a member of the performance family. A true AMG for the Hot Hatch stage!
Reinforced body-in-white with increased torsional stiffness
Specific measures to strengthen the front section of the bodyshell form the basis for the precise turn-in ability and the toe and camber stability of the chassis components, even when driving at speed. A so-called «shear panel», a bolted aluminium plate under the engine, increases the torsional stiffness of the front section. Two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody also reduce torsion and increase the stiffness.
New four-cylinder turbo engine with output of 225 kW (306 hp)
The 2.0-litre turbo engine is a new development and is based on the M 260 four-cylinder engine in the new A-Class. The new drive boasts a spontaneous response to accelerator pedal commands, high tractive power (400 Nm max. torque from 3,000 rpm), a supremely lively response and an emotional engine sound. The crankcase made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium reduces the vehicle weight where it matters most for driving dynamics
Sophisticated turbocharging with twin-scroll turbocharger
A twin-scroll turbocharger is used for turbocharging. It combines optimum responsiveness at low engine speeds with a strong power increase at higher speeds. The housing of the twin-scroll turbocharger is divided into two parallel ducts. Together with two separate exhaust ducts in the exhaust manifold, this makes it possible to channel the exhaust gases separately on the turbine wheel.
The cylinders are divided into two cylinder groups and each is directed onto a turbine flow of the twin-scroll turbine. The cylinder groups are defined based on the ignition sequence.
This results in a further advantage of twin-scroll technology, i.e. minimisation of the mutually adverse effects of the individual cylinders on the gas cycle. The exhaust gas back pressure is reduced and gas exchange and engine efficiency are improved.
Numerous engine measures increase efficiency
The high technological standards of the new four-cylinder engine are also underscored by numerous efficiency-enhancing measures. These include CAMTRONIC variable valve control, intelligent thermal management for engine and oil, high-precision piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition. In production, the patented CONICSHAPE® cylinder honing reduces internal engine friction and also increases efficiency.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission also contributes to the agile and dynamic character of the new A 35 4MATIC. The gear ratios have been configured so that the driver experiences very spontaneous acceleration in all speed ranges, combined with fast shifting and optimum connections when shifting up.
The standard RACE-START function allows maximum acceleration from stationary and is a highly emotional experience. The functions of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission are rounded off with a temporary M mode activated by operating the steering wheel shift paddles in any driving mode, and with the manual transmission mode «M» for manual gear shifting with the shift paddles.
AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive
Dynamism, agility and performance – these three attributes characterise the standard all-wheel drive of the new AMG A 35 4MATIC. The variable AMG Performance 4MATIC combines the best possible traction with lots of driving fun. The torque distribution is infinitely variable to suit the dynamic handling requirements. The spectrum ranges from front-wheel drive only to a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear axles.
A multi-disc clutch that is integrated in the rear axle transmission is responsible for the variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It is controlled electro-mechanically.

The latest vehicle designed and developed at the facilities of SEAT in Martorell (Barcelona) and produced in Wolfsburg (Germany), marks the third instalment in the company’s SUV product offensive and shows a glimpse of the future design language of the new SEAT models. The Tarraco will bring the company new customers, boost brand image and have an important effect on profits, as this is a model with high financial contribution. And it will be the new flagship model of the brand.
The new Tarraco sits at the top of SEAT’s SUV family, as the bigger brother to both the Ateca and Arona, and mixes state-of-the-art technology, dynamic, agile handling, practicality and functionality with elegant, progressive design. The Tarraco combines the many advantages of its larger dimensions to offer a vehicle that can take on all elements of modern life.
The new SUV blends the key attributes of every vehicle in the SEAT range: design and functionality, sportiness and comfort, accessibility and quality, technology and emotion, but in a form factor that suits a wider variety of lifestyles. The SEAT Tarraco has been engineered for drivers looking for excitement and functionality in a single vehicle. The key to its nuanced approach to practicality and dynamic behaviour is the latest technology from Volkswagen Group and the MQB-A long wheelbase architecture that underpins the large SUV.
The vehicle’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) setup gives the perfect balance between a sporty feeling when you are behind the wheel, and a more comfortable ride when you need to cover longer distances, on different types of roads. The driver can select which setting they prefer, but the system can also adapt automatically, modifying the ride depending on the road surface and driving style.
The smoothness of the ride quality is matched by the performance, efficiency and reliability of the powertrain options. All engines benefit from direct-injection, turbocharging and start-stop technology and offer power outputs of between 150PS and 190PS.
Two petrol variants will be available: a four-cylinder 1.5 litre TSI unit that produces 150PS and is linked to a six-speed manual transmission powering the front wheels, and a 2.0 litre, 190PS offering mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4Drive total traction system. There are two diesel options, both 2.0 litre TDIs, with power outputs of 150PS and 190PS respectively. The 150PS variant can be connected to either a front-wheel drive, six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG with 4Drive system. The higher powered version is solely available in 4Drive/seven-speed DSG gearbox. Later on, the SEAT Tarraco will also benefit from alternative powertrain technologies.
The new SEAT Tarraco has all the driving assistance systems needed to make driving more comfortable and secure, even in more demanding driving environments. Well known systems such as Lane Assist and Front Assist including bicycle and pedestrian detection are standard in Europe, while systems such as Blind Spot Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, Traffic Jam Assist, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), Light Assist and Emergency Assist are available as options.
Taking safety to the next level for SEAT the Tarraco SUV also includes Emergency Call, Pre-crash Assist and Rollover Detection, meaning no matter what the situation, the vehicle is designed to meet the most demanding safety standards in order to make the large SUV the benchmark model in the segment.

BMW Presents The Future With The Piloted Electric Vision iNext
This is Vision iNext, BMW’s latest all-electric, part driverless car. This prototype isn’t pure futuristic fantasy either. A car based on the iNext will head for production at the BMW Plant Dingolfing in 2021. Company chief Harald Krüger says this latest concept car provides what he sees as “building blocks for the future from which the entire company and all of its brands are set to benefit.” The iNext, he feels, “represents a new era of sheer driving pleasure.”
The iNext SAV (as in BMW’s sports activity vehicle category) is automated, emission-free and fully connected. What’s more, it can be self-driven or chauffeured. In the first scenario, the “boost” mode triggers the electric drive system to deliver, what BMW promises to be, a dynamic and silent driving experience on zero emissions. Then in the “ease” autonomous mode, the car takes over all driving functions for a vehicle that offers a space for a wide range of activities. The idea is for this multi-functioning hub to be at once a mode for transport, a space for work and a sanctuary for relaxation, interaction and entertainment.
The iNext offers the vision increasingly being put forward by leading car manufacturers. The near future will see a first wave of cars that act as a bridge between the more conventional present with the hyper-futuristic fully-autonomous future. It is a vision that is radical enough without being unrealistic. The cars Audi, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, Mercedes have planned don’t necessarily challenge the visual language of conventional cars. Yet through high technology, they offer a very different and versatile car experience, something that will evolve further as tech and digitalization advance. Expect to see this first stage on the roads in the early 2020s. The next stage, we are promised, will take on more exciting avant-garde form.
The BMW Group’s strength in this competitive scenario is that the marque benefits from over a decade of R&D in electric driving through “project i”. The electric sub-brand formed in 2007 has overseen the creation of the i3 city vehicle and i8 performance car, both in their second life-cycle. What’s more, technology from these i cars is constantly feeding into the gradually electrification of the BMW and Mini range.
“BMW i exists to generate creative, pioneering ideas which transform the way we think about mobility,” says Adrian van Hooydonk. “The Vision iNext marks another next big step on that journey of transformation, showing how more intelligent vehicles can make our lives easier and more beautiful,” adds the BMW Group senior vice president of design.
The form is sculptural and full of visual movement with an expansive panoramic roof to flood the interior with light. It continues the language explored in the electric i family. The large, interlinked double-kidney grille, the iconic side window graphic and the blue accent surfaces at the front, sides and rear have clearly adopted the i electric design featured on the i Vision Dynamics last year.
Inside has been designed to feel more like a living room with a blend of cloth and wood materials that resemble furniture. There are two individual seats in the front and a single bench in the rear for up to four people to sit comfortably in this car. BMW has kept the physical steering wheel and digital driver displays, but other than this there are no conventional screens and mechanical controls here. Technology has been hidden away from rear passengers to enhance this homely, living-space character. Only when required by the driver or passengers does technology becomes visible and operable. BMW says in the future it will be working with “shy tech”, whereby various functions can be operated through surfaces – wood or cloth – altogether eliminating the need for displays.
The iNext will become the marque’s technology flagship. “Personal mobility is set to experience significant change,” says Klaus Fröhlich, member of the BMW board of management responsible for development. “The possibilities opened up by autonomous driving and ever-expanding connectivity enable a whole new range of experiences and ways of shaping a journey.” He explains: “We have designed the all-electric iNext as a mobile environment that enhances quality of life, a new ‘favorite space’ in which we can be ourselves and relax.” Fröhlich says all products made at BMW going forward will “revolve around people and their needs and desires when it comes to mobility”.

The Audi e-tron is the first fully electrically powered series production model from the brand with the four rings. The company will present its sporty full-size SUV – which is suitable for everyday use – to the world for the first time in San Francisco.
Standing still or on the move, the Audi e-tron is electrifying. Its expressive sill area, the electric tailboard and the light gray Singleframe are indicators of the high-voltage technology that makes for a special driving experience. The electric SUV is powered by two powerful electric motors that are locally CO2-neutral and virtually silent. A new generation of the quattro drive, the electric all-wheel drive, ensures excellent traction and dynamics. It ensures the continuous and variable regulation of the ideal distribution of drive torques between the two axles – within a fraction of a second.
A key factor for the sporty character and outstanding transverse dynamics is the low and central position at which the battery system is installed. It gives the vehicle a range that is suitable for driving long distances. During far more than 90 percent of all decelerations, the Audi e-tron recovers energy solely via its electric motors. The electric SUV taps its maximum recuperation potential in combination with the integrated electrohydraulic brake control system. Audi is the world’s first carmaker to use such a system in an electrically powered series production vehicle. The cleverly designed aerodynamics also contribute significantly to its efficiency. One highlight of this concept are the optional virtual exterior mirrors – a worldwide first in a series production model. Not only do they reduce aerodynamic drag, they also take digitalization in the vehicle to a whole new level.
The Audi e-tron offers the spaciousness and comfort of one of the brand’s typical full-size models. Paired with high-quality materials and fine workmanship, it makes electric mobility a premium experience. This is also ensured by the comprehensive and reliable range of charging options with intelligent solutions for at home and on the go.
From navigation with the e-tron route planner, which displays the appropriate route with the required charging points, automated billing at the charging station and all the way to remote control via smartphone – the Audi e-tron is extremely well connected. It is equipped with the high-end media center MMI navigation plus including LTE Advanced and a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard. Numerous assist systems further relieve the driver. For example, the standard efficiency assist promotes an economic driving style by displaying predictive information and performing automatic recuperation. If the customer selects the adaptive cruise assist, the system can also brake and accelerate the electric SUV predictively.
The Audi e-tron rolls off the assembly line at the CO2-neutral plant in Brussels. Initial deliveries to European customers are planned for late 2018. The starting price of the electric SUV in Germany is 79,900 euros.
