2019 Mazda 3 price and release date

The 2019 Mazda has been revealed at the LA Auto Show, with sales opening at the start of 2019. Expect it to cost about the same as the current model that starts from £18,000 for the regular five-door hatchback and increases to £20,000 for the more practical fastback model
2019 Mazda 3 styling

The new 2019 Mazda 3 looks strikingly similar to the Kai concept that we first saw at the Tokyo motor show in 2017.

Two of the main elements carried over from that car are the huge grille and the frowning headlights. The long bonnet signals the car’s sporty intent as does the swept back roofline that slopes into the boot. The tear drop back windows and large rear pillar also help make the car look more svelte even if the latter will also harm over-the-shoulder visibility.

2019 Mazda 3 specs

The new 2019 Mazda 3 gains plenty of tech, most notably an enormous (possibly full-width) infotainment screen, leaving very few buttons on the centre console. The car will get a more premium feel to compete with the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class, as you can see from the soft-touch plastics to go with streaks of metal trim throughout the cabin.

2019 Mazda 3 SkyActive-X engine

The biggest news about the 2019 Mazda 3 is its SkyActiv-X petrol engine, which is said to give diesel-like fuel economy thanks to what Mazda calls Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SCCI).

It allows the engine to work in two ways – the spark plugs can operate like in any traditional petrol engine to burn the fuel, or the engine can quietly switch over to diesel-style compression ignition (where pressure, rather than spark plugs causes the fuel to burn) to improve efficiency.

This clever new tech, combined with a conservative 187 hp and 230nm of torque, will mean the supercharged 2.0-litre engine will be as efficient as a diesel, but without the sooty emissions. The car will also be available with petrol and diesel engines carried over from the outgoing model.
