Ford Ranger Raptor launches in the UK – Monstrous performance pick-up truck specs REVEALED
Ford has unveiled the new Ranger Raptor for Europe.
The Raptor edition of the Ranger is a performance model of Europe’s best-selling pick-up truck.
It is a car that is immensely popular in the US but has not been on offer in the UK.
It was launched at the Gamescom trade fair, in Cologne, Germany this week ahead of it going on sale in Europe in 2019.
The reason the car was unveiled at the gaming convention was due to its inclusion in the new Forza Horizon 4 video racing game.
It is the first car to ever make its debut at Gamescom.
Powering the car is a Bi-turbo version of Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine that delivers 213P and 500Nm of torque which is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
“Forget everything you think you know about pick-ups,” said Leo Roeks, Ford Performance Director, Europe.
“Our new Ranger Raptor is a different breed – a thoroughbred desert racer and extreme lifestyle off-roader that can toil with the best of them in the harshest of working conditions.”
Its chassis has been designed with super-strong reinforced low-alloy steels so it can handle off-road racing and its suspension has been tuned specifically to deal with difficult terrain at high-speeds while still delivering comfort.
All-terrain BF Goodrich 285/70 R17 tyres have been specially developed for the Ranger Raptor which is said to provide “an iron grip in wet, mud, sand and snow conditions.”
Under the car is a new bash plate made from 2.3mm thick high-strength steel in addition to the Ranger’s standard engine and transfer case under-shields.
Its styling is both rugged and sporty with a dominant shape and aggressive characteristics that look robust and solid. This is reinforced by the high driving position and chunky wheel design.
The grille is inspired by the Ford F‑150 Raptor and dominates the front-end of the car between the xenon headlights and the frame mounted bumper system.
Inside the car, there is a number of features that indicate its sportiness including the lightweight, racing-style magnesium paddle shifters.
It alcoves with Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system, which can be specified withApple Car Play and Android Auto.
An eight-inch touchscreen sits at the centre of the dashboard which controls the entertainment and navigation systems.
Ford has created six Terrain Management System modes to allow the car’s driving dynamics to be customised based on the terrain.
• Normal mode – emphasising comfort, fuel economy and driveability
• Sport mode – more responsive for spirited on-road driving
• Grass/Gravel/Snow mode – designed to inspire safe and confident driving on off-road slippery and uneven surfaces
• Mud/Sand mode – tuning vehicle responses for optimum traction and momentum in deep, deformable surfaces like loose sand and mud
• Rock mode – specifically for low-speed rocky terrain where smooth controllability is key
• Baja mode – tuning responses for high-speed off-road performance, just like drivers need in the famous Baja Desert Rally
In addition to the different terrain and driving modes it also comes with a number of driver assistance and safety technologies.
These include an enhanced version of Ford Stability Control incorporating Roll Mitigation Function; and Electronic Stability Control; Trailer Sway Control; Hill Start Assist; Hill Descent Control; and Load Adaptive Control.
Ford of Britain is currently deciding whether to sell the Ranger Raptor at its flagship Ford Store showrooms or at its commercial vehicle dealerships. It’ll arrive in the UK in ‘mid 2019’ with prices starting from around £40,000.
